The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has started to follow the path of other countries by implementing the first to file patent system. Before, inventors could use a dated journal stamped by a notary to hold the date on file. Now inventors must file to be the first person to obtain the rights of their invention.

The new process brings more certainty and objectivity to the patent world. Most of the world is under the first to file patent system. Once every country is under the first to file system it will make obtaining a world patent easier.
